Cineol Content in Eucalyptus Oil: 60%, 70% IP/BP and Eucalyptol 99.5%

Eucalyptus oil is one of the few essential oils routinely bought against a single number. That number is cineol content, also written as eucalyptol, and it determines both the therapeutic character of the oil and whether it can legally be used in a pharmacopoeial product.

What cineol actually governs

Cineol (CAS 470-82-6) is the constituent responsible for the sharp, camphoraceous, decongestant character of eucalyptus. Crude oil straight from distillation carries a variable cineol level along with a range of other terpenes that contribute a rougher, more resinous note. Rectification raises the cineol fraction and strips much of that background, which is why a 70 percent oil smells noticeably cleaner than a crude one.

The commercial grades

  • Crude eucalyptus oil: unrectified, variable, cheapest. Suitable for industrial fragrancing, cleaning products and applications where the specification is loose.
  • 60 percent: a working commercial grade, rectified enough to be consistent, used widely in personal care and household products.
  • 70 percent IP/BP: the pharmacopoeial grade. This is what a monograph-controlled product requires, and the difference is regulatory, not merely qualitative.
  • Eucalyptol 99.5 percent: effectively the isolated molecule, used where a precise, reproducible cineol input is needed without the rest of the oil.

Why buying below the monograph is a false economy

If a finished product claims compliance with a pharmacopoeial standard, the input must meet it. Buying a 60 percent oil because the price is better, then relying on it in a product sold against an IP or BP claim, is a compliance failure waiting to be found in an audit rather than a clever bit of procurement. Where the application is genuinely cosmetic or household, the lower grade is entirely appropriate and there is no reason to overspend.

Specifying properly

State the cineol percentage, the pharmacopoeial reference if one applies, and require a certificate of analysis per batch. Gem Aromatics supplies the full ladder from crude through 70 percent IP/BP to rectified eucalyptol within its cineol derivatives range, so a formulator can move up or down the grades without changing supplier and without re-qualifying an entirely new source.
